How to Raise Pokémon: Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour

Monkeys! Everybody loves monkeys. Since Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour are pretty similar to each other, I"ll be talking about all three of them in the same article. And so we begin!

Where/How do I get Pansage/Pansear/Panpour?

You will receive one of these pokemon from talking to a girl in the Dreamyard. Which monkey you get is determined by what starter you chose. If you picked Snivy you get Panpour. If you picked Tepig you get Pansage. And if you picked Oshawott you get Pansear.

You can also catch the monkeys at Pinwheel Forest and Lostlorn Forest. Keep in mind though, they're pretty hard to find.

Are Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour good?

Yes. It is extremely helpful to have a fire, water, or grass type on your team other than your starter at such an early point in the game. Pansear mows down grass types, which are going to be ridiculously abundant once you get to Pinwheel Forest. Not to mention the third gym uses bug types, and the seventh, ice types.

Pansage beats rock types and water types who would otherwise give Tepig a lot of trouble. Even disregarding his synergy with Tepig, Pansage is really one of the best grass types in the game.

Panpour... okay there aren't exactly a whole lot of fire types this early in the game, Cheren and Chili notwithstanding. Still, Panpour is a great pokemon to have with you, and much like Pansage is one of the better water types to have.

Stat wise, all the monkeys are identical. They are fast and have decent attack and special attack, but low defense and HP. One thing to keep in mind is that the monkeys don't get very strong attacks until a bit later in the game. So most of their strength at that point will come from having type advantages.

When/How do Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour evolve?

Pansage evolves into Simisage if you use a leaf stone on him. Pansear evolves into Simisear if you use a fire stone on him. And Panpour evolves into Simipour if you use a Water Stone on him. You can get one of these stones from an NPC in Castelia City. However I suggest waiting at least until they learn Seed Bomb/Flame Burst/Scald respectively, as after they evolve they do not learn any new level up moves.

What moves should I teach Pansage/Pansear/Panpour?

The monkeys get a load of good TM moves throughout the game, as well as a few good level up moves. Typically you want as many different typed attacks as possible so you can always get a super effective hit, but there's also a few good support moves to mention.

What you should teach Pansage:
Slot 1: (Level 1) Scratch > (TM) Rock Smash > (Level 19) Bite > (TM) Brick Break
Slot 2: (Level 4) Leer > (TM) Work Up
Slot 3: (Level 7) Lick > (Level 16) Leech Seed > (TM) Acrobatics
Slot 4: (Level 10) Vine Whip > (TM) Grass Knot > (Level 22) Seed Bomb

What you should teach Pansear:
Slot 1: (Level 1) Scratch > (TM) Rock Smash > (Level 19) Bite > (TM) Dig/Brick Break
Slot 2: (Level 4) Leer > (TM) Work Up > (TM) Grass Knot
Slot 3: (Level 7) Lick > (Level 16) Yawn
Slot 4: (Level 10) Incinerate > (Level 22) Flame Burst

What you should teach Panpour:
Slot 1: (Level 1) Scratch > (TM) Rock Smash > (Level 19) Bite > (TM) Blizzard/Acrobatics
Slot 2: (Level 4) Leer > (TM) Work Up/(HM) Waterfall
Slot 3: (Level 7) Lick > (TM) Grass Knot/(HM) Waterfall
Slot 4: (Level 10) Water Gun > (Level 22) Scald > (HM) Surf

Other moves you can use:

(TM) Sunny Day (Pansear/Pansage)

Sunny Day is a good move to have on Pansear because it boosts his fire type moves and makes him take less damage from water type moves. Not to mention you can teach him Solarbeam, and then when used with Sunny Day, fire off Solarbeams without having to charge. Pansage can do this too.

(TM) Rain Dance (Panpour)

A simliar concept to Sunny Day. Use Rain Dance, and get super powered surfs for five turns. You won't get a one turn Solarbeam like with Sunny Day, but it's still a pretty good move.

In closing

The elementals monkeys are about as good as free pokémon get. They are extremely versatile, and consistently useful throughout the game. Out of the three I think I prefer Pansage though. The other guys are cool, but Pansage evolves into Elvis. You can't get much cooler than that. Tell me, which monkey is your favorite?
