How to Raise Pokémon: Pidove

Pidove. The national generic bird-Pokémon of Unova. And of course, being national generic bird means, Pidove is most likely the first flying type anyone will run into, as well as the one most people will end up using. So with that in mind I might as well tell you how to use him properly.

Where do I get Pidove?

You can find Pidove on Route 3, and in Pinwheel Forest. On Route 3 Pidove is found at any level from 8 to 11, and 10 to 13 in thick grass.

Is Pidove good?

Yes, he is. Pidove has the merit of being the first flying type the player has access to. Later in the game Pidove has high speed and attack stats. He doesn't get a lot of high base power attacks, or even attacks that aren't flying or normal type. But Pidove does get some decent non-damaging attacks to help compensate.

Personally I think Archen and Sigilyph are both better choices than Pidove if you need a flying type. But not only do you get to add Pidove to your party at a much earlier point than those two, Pidove has a lot less weaknesses than Archen and Sigilyph.

Generally Pidove is a better choice if you want something low maintenance that can still hold it's own in most situations. He's not a juggernaut, but he gets along just fine.

How does Pidove evolve?

Pidove evolves into Tranquill at level 21. Tranquill then evolves into Unfezant at level 32.

What moves should I teach my Pidove?

Typically with Pidove you want to have one normal type attack, at least one flying type attack, and one or two non-damaging moves.

Moves you should teach Pidove:

Slot 1: (Level 1) Gust > (Level 15) Air Cutter > (Level 32) Air Slash > (HM) Fly

Slot 2: (Level 4) Growl > (Level 18) Roost > (Level 41) Featherdance

Slot 3: (Level 8) Leer > (Level 23) Detect/(Level 27) Taunt/(Level 45) Swagger

Slot 4: (Level 11) Quick Attack > (TM) Return/(Level 50) Facade

In Closing

Have you ever used Pidgey in one of the older Pokémon games? Well Pidove is just like that. He's not the strongest of the bunch, but he can still kick butt if you give him enough attention. Even if you just slap him on your roster so you don't have to walk back and forth around Unova, you are going to appreciate him.
